Children at this age are in the midst of learning about the self. In this brief video notice three (or more) opportunities for the child to learn self-awareness and self-actualization. You may notice the following:
- 00:00 – 00:28 The child stands alone, making her own decisions about what her next move will be. No teacher guides or directs her. How does that lead to self-awareness?
- A good teacher is aware of the child yet doesn’t interfere with her decision-making. At what point might a teacher intervene?
- 00:30 – 00:44 How do tap shoes help a child learn about self? What do you notice about the way tap shoes change the child’s experience?
- 00:45 – 01:32 The children are using “loose parts” in the dramatic play area. How do the open-ended materials lend themselves to more creative play? How are these deliberately placed teaching materials helping the children learn about their own capabilities and self-awareness?
